“Affordable housing” is a major phrase in current politics, especially in Nashville. DO YOU CARE? Probably we find it far off the edge of our thinking because we have a place to live that we can pay for and there are SO MANY issues to “care” about. People without homes are living in ways we cannot imagine, so we are not finding it an urgent concern.
In the coming weeks we will be giving you some statistics ... but that doesn’t prompt us to care .... we will be giving you information in how you can help in some small way ... but caring really comes from hearing stories straight from people who are homeless.
Room in the Inn (RITI) is an outreach ministry of our church (along with lots of other churches in the Nashville area) and it goes on every Wednesday here at WEUMC during the cold months. Here is where you can hear stories from the homeless and where you can DO a little something about “affordable housing” for real, struggling people who have no home.
We can only do this ministry with lots of volunteers giving just one Wednesday night.
|Here’s How It Works||What You Can Do|
|A volunteer drives our church van to get guests||get qualified to drive the van|
|A hot meal is readied for their arrival||sign up to cook part of dinner|
|Mattresses are prepared with linens in a Sunday school room in our Lower Level||put sheets on mattresses|
|Volunteers eat with guests, chat with them (hearing their stories)||Sign Up to host the dinner|
|Guests watch a little TV, go to bed||spend the night|
|At 4:45 a.m. overnight hosts make coffee and serve breakfast||make breakfast and leave at church|
|At 5:15 a.m. a volunteer drives guests back to the center and volunteers go home||make 12 sack lunches for guests to take with them|
A word about security: Guests are screened by the Center. If any church registers complaints about a guest (inappropriate language, conflict with other guests, or more obvious broken rules like bringing a weapon or drinking alcohol), they will be prohibited from participation for weeks! They are very agreeable and compliant!
Care enough to get informed about signing up to participate this year!
