Launch Pad provides a peaceful and safer place to sleep for people between the ages of 18-24 who are sleeping outside or are currently without permanent housing. Their mission is to create a network of temporary safer sleeping shelters for homeless young adults, which are open and affirming to LGBTQ while working towards a broader comprehensive system of care. During the cold months, West End UMC will offer space in the Lower Level to Launch Pad on Sunday evenings beginning November 1. There are several ways you can help.
First, you can get trained to staff evening and overnight shifts. Launch Pad provides all of the volunteers to run the program, and West End is providing space. To work a Launch Pad shift, you must attend their Volunteer Training. Launch Pad needs four volunteers each night:
- one evening volunteer 8 - 11:15 p.m.
- two volunteers who stay overnight 11 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.
- one early morning volunteer 5:45 - 7:30 a.m.
Other volunteer opportunities are to provide dinner, a simple breakfast, and/or protein packs for the guests. Launch Pad will offer food suggestions and items for the protein packs. We also need four West End members to volunteer as a Greeter one Sunday a month to meet the Launch Pad volunteers at 8 p.m., show them around the Lower Level and give them keys.
If you would like to volunteer as a greeter or you or your class/small group are interested in helping with food, contact Lisa Gwock at firstname.lastname@example.org.
