Performing Ancient Israel's Stories of Violence Against Women
Experience the stories of Bathsheba, Jephthah’s Daughter, Dinah, Tamar, Hagar, Silent Concubine and Susanna through staged readings, improv, music, poetry, dance, and art.
This worship service will create a space to lament the violence against women through performance art. We live in a culture that romanticizes, explains away, or denies violence against women and many of the Biblical narratives about women experiencing violence are untold. This service will be a place to hear women’s stories and acknowledge the loss and brokenheartedness in the individual’s story. Philospher and poet Nietzsche explains how we can connect with our own loss by looking at the loss of another, “when we gaze long into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.” Through these stories we do not have to be silent about violence, but they provide an opportunity to Remember the Brokenhearted in the lives of ancient Israel and our own lives.
Participating artists include: Nia Allen, Emily Baird, Rachel Brittain, Sherry Cothran Woolsey, Chad Gurley, Nancy Hawthorne, Beth Henderson, Heather Lefkowitz, Franchelle Lucas and Michael Williams. The service will happen Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in the Fourth Floor Theater.
