West End’s Children’s Department is excited and honored
to have the opportunity to enter into ministry with you and your family. Our
goal is to provide a variety of opportunities that nurture and encourage
spiritual growth in Christian community. We aim to do this by supporting and
affirming all facets of spiritual development and formation. We recognize the
importance of family life and welcome all into our dedicated and engaged faith
community.

Sunday school is a priority for the Children’s Department at West End. Beginning with infants, age-appropriate materials and methods are used to help even our youngest ones become aware of God’s great love for them and the fundamentals of the Christian faith.

The Confirmation process at West End UMC happens in the 6th grade year to mark the transition from childhood to adolescence in terms of one’s faith journey and one’s intentional participation in the life of the church. It is a time when these young people ponder what it means to encounter the faith narrative from creation to Christianity, embrace the essential beliefs and practices of the United Methodist Church, and embody the confirmation vows and embark on the Christian discipleship journey.
The Confirmation class meets on Sunday evenings from 5:00 – 7:00 throughout the fall and spring. This is supplemented by Sunday morning class time together, field trips, service projects, and a class retreat.
-
Throughout the school year, activities for our 5th and 6th graders are held. These events include social activities and service projects. This time of fellowship helps to reinforce the connections between the children and the adult leaders they interact with during these years.

In 3rd grade, our children receive an engraved Bible, given by the congregation and presented to them on a Sunday early in the fall during the 11:00 worship service.
The 3rd grade Sunday school class spends the remainder of the school year learning to use that Bible, studying many of the Old and New Testament stories.
If your child becomes part of our congregation after September of their 3rd grade year, please inform one of his or her Sunday school teachers and we will see to it that he or she also receives an engraved Bible.

Sexual and Human Development Workshop Held each year for 5th and 6th graders and their parents, this workshop opens the discussions of sexual and human development framed in the “Created by God” context and helps to open line of communication between parents and children in an easy and comfortable manner.

In June, West End hosts Vacation Bible School for children ages 3 –
6th grade. During the week, the children learn Bible stories in a fun way
through storytelling, discovery, games, and crafts.
In July, Music Camp gets underway. The participants learn songs and dialogue
in order to perform a final musical for parents and friends at the end of the
week. All musicals are retellings of Biblical stories and are great fun for the
children participating.
In August, Local Mission Week is held for our older elementary children.
Throughout the week, the kids learn about various needs and mission
opportunities in our community, as well as participate in multiple mission
events.

All church members, especially families with children, are invited to come and share in a potluck dinner and make an Advent wreath for their home on the first Sunday of Advent.

Young children are invited to bring their baskets and hunt for eggs and goodies. Afterwards, children and their families enjoy a time of fellowship and food.
